We now begin the second part of the Cleveland Way which stretches all the way along the coast from Saltburn to Filey. Note the shape of ammonites carved into this rock. The coast which we walk along is noted for the number of fossils which can be found here and is commonly called 'Yorkshire's Dinosaur Coast.' |

It certainly was a dull and chilly day when we arrived back at Saltburn for the coastal section of the walk. However the weather forecast for improving weather during the week was promising. So we set off climbing up Hunt cliff looking forward to the superb coastal views and villages we knew lay ahead. |
Shortly after starting we look back to the deserted beach. In the far distance the Steel Works at Redcar. The beaches and sea front at Redcar were used as a film location in the 2007 film 'Atonement'. |
Standing next to the footpath this made a good prop for a photograph. |
You will probably be suprised to learn that this 'ugly' concrete building is actually listed and protected as an 'Ancient Monument'. Read on.... |
Guibal fanhouse once part of the Huntcliff Ironstone mine. |
A depiction of ironstone miners which was on the information board for the Guibal fanhouse. |
Approaching the jetty at Skinningrove. It was built in 1886 by the Skinningrove Iron Company. The weather is still cloudy in front of us but there is now a blue sky behind us. |
On the beach at Skinningrove (GR713204) and just look how the weather has now improved. Warm fleeces have been stuffed back into our rucksacks. Skinningrove is a village next to the sea with a steelworks as a neighbour. An industrialised area the village suffered severe flooding in 2000. |
A recent addition, this boat had just been sited here. It had been found damaged along the coast and had once belonged to a man who before his death had lived in the village. |
We had a chat with two workman who were planting flowers next to the boat and who had repaired and painted it. They told us the two figures of fisherman had been made by a man with a chain saw. Impressive. |
I think this one must have been a boxer before he'd been a fisherman - and not a very good one either. Just look at that nose! The name painted on the side of the boat is REPUS. Turn it around and you have SUPER and that's what I think the project has been. Well done to all those responsible, it certainly brightens the place up. |
As this section of the walk is along the coastline let me introduce a nautical theme. A link to a sea shanty . The singers are from Devon and Cornwall, but we won't hold that against them :-) It's especially for those of you who live in South Australia, just to let you know we haven't forgotten you.
