I've been wanting to practice taking photographs at night time for a while now. Durham City offers some great locations,
especially as the Cathedral and Castle are illuminated at night throughout the year. Additionally there was a 'Festival of Light' in
the City between 6th - 8th November and then later in the month the Christmas lights were switched on.

So weighed down with camera, tripod, warm coat, hat & gloves I set off.......... (the first set of photographs were taken during
the Festival of Light)
...........to everyone. Whoever and wherever you are.
The bronze of the sculpture 'The Journey', by the renowned sculptor Fenwick Lawson who is County Durham born and a
City of Durham resident. The sculpture is in Millenium square just off Claypath near to the Market Place and it depicts the
journey of monks, fleeing Lindisfarne Abbey (Holy Island) off the Northumberland coast. They are carrying the
uncorrupted body of St Cuthbert to it's eventual destination at Durham. The monks were forced to flee Lindisfarne in
A.D. 875 because of continued attacks there by the Vikings.

There were a lot of people out and about looking around Durham because of the Festival of Light. Many of them had
information sheets obtained from the Tourist Information Office and were wearing night lights around their necks. Look
between the two monks at the front of the sculture. A child wearing a night light had squeezed in there and was watching
me set up the camera.
Old style telephone boxes in the Market Place. Some of the customers in the Market Tavern also show interest in the
man with a camera.
The side of Framwellgate bridge with Durham Castle and part of the central tower of Durham Cathedral behind.
'Light of Darkness' under Framwellgate bridge
Durham Cathedral from across Palace Green. In my opinion this area of Durham is so deserving of it's World Heritage status.I was
really pleased to see that the moon had put in an appearance too.
The entrance to Durham Castle. You'll notice the Castle and Cathedral are lit up in different colours.
An old style street light with the central tower of the cathedral behind.
I thought the floodlights added a bit of a 'spooky' atmosphere to the old gravestones. You're not frightened are
you? No, me neither, but I'm moving on swiftly to the next location which is on Page 2. See you there...............
